Man goes to jail after buying drugs off the internet

WHEN people say you can buy just about anything online, they aren't lying.

A 48-year-old Rockhampton man was yesterday sentenced to four years and six months in jail for buying meth off the internet.

Anthony James Wathen pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court of Rockhampton to importing a dangerous drug, importing a precursor chemical, trafficking a dangerous drug, producing a dangerous drug and a number of other drug-related offences.

Crown prosecutor Joshua Phillips told the court police interrupted a meth cook when they executed a search warrant at Wathen's address in December 2012.

A short time later, police conducted a second search and found that drug-producing equipment was still at the house.

Wathen then ordered two ounces of 50% pure methamphetamine online from America for $3000.

The court heard the wholesale value could be in the order of $20,000.

However, on arrival border security seized the package, which was addressed to Wathen.

The court heard Wathen also bought 200 ephedrine tablets online from India for $200 and 1200 from Canada for $120.

These were sent to Wathen's friend, who contacted police.

Mr Phillips said Wathen had a serious drug habit and became involved in the drug trade for his own benefit.

Defence barrister Jeff Clarke told the court Wathen was a drug user at a young age.

However, there was a 15 year period where he stayed out of trouble.

Mr Clarke said dealing with a neurological disorder that has cost him his leg and the break down of his marriage led him astray again.

He said his client was co-operative with police.

Wathen will be eligible for parole on July 5 to take into account time already served.
