A lesson in philanthropy

MOUNT Murchison State School students have been learning about the importance of giving, thanks to the adopt-a-family appeal.

The students got on board with a basket and donated money from a free dress day to purchase items for a local family in need.

Principal Julie-Ann Clarke said the idea of adopting a family came after she decided to teach the children about giving at Christmas.

"They have already started talking about what they can put in," she said. "One of the students raided his piggy bank and he and his little sister said they wanted to give it to the families and we had to explain to them that it wasn't something to put money in, so now they are looking at giving a voucher."

Julie-Ann said it was more than just teaching about giving.

"We have to talk about things that are non-perishable and what that means and why there is a voucher for meat because it is a fresh food."

Year 5 student Chole Barnett said she was looking forward to having a different Christmas this year: "We are doing it because last time we took but this time we are going to give. It feels better than last time."

Julie-Ann said she was impressed with the students' support.

"They are actually really keen on it and have really taken it on."
