ROCKHAMPTON'S Alex Glover has seen his friends suffer for too long.

Depression has affected many of his friends, and he's taking a step to change their lives.

The 22-year-old told The Bulletin how seeing his transgender friends unhappy had prompted him to bring the issue of sexual reassignment to the forefront and raise money for surgeries.

"I have a lot of transgender friends in Rockhampton and you hear from them that people are attempting suicide over it," Alex said.

"My transgender friends say they're living in agony because they've living in the wrong body."

Alex knows close to a dozen people in Rockhampton suffering from transgender issues, while five close transgender friends eager to have the surgery.

"To have the surgery would change their lives," the TAFE student said.

Alex, who is bisexual, has started a go fund me campaign online to raise money for transgenders in Rockhampton to get sexual reassignment surgery.

"I want to help save lives," Alex said.

"My friends say they're in a lot of pain emotionally and mentally.

"They have this feeling inside that they're in the wrong body; they might feel male inside and their body is completely wrong."

The idea of fundraising for his cause came to Alex after a go fund me campaign raising money for a potato salad went viral online.

"If someone could raise $50,000 to make a salad, we can raise money to save lives," Alex said.

And he's busy doing his research on the surgery, in hopes of getting a local surgeon to perform the procedure.

"I've spoken to two surgeons in Rocky and asked them if they're willing to look at the surgeries and learn about them," Alex said.

"There are only a few surgeons around Australia that offer the surgery."
