BILOELA Rugby Union recorded a spirited victory in the local rugby derby against Dawson Valley Drovers 20-17 in Moura on Saturday.

Biloela started the game effectively from the kick off with Todd Jensen, Allan Kunabure and Brodie Dreger strong in both attack and defence.

Biloela had the first opportunity to score when Marcus Costar swooped on a turnover and linked with Dreger for a long range break.

Unfortunately the movement broke down with excellent cover defence.

This disappointment was short lived when Dreger crossed for the open try of the game.

The conversion was unsuccessful and gave Biloela an early 5-0 lead.

Dawson Valley responded with their own try after a chip was regathered to create space and an unconverted try to level the scores 5-5.

Biloela again regained the lead when rampaging number 8, Chris Dawson, crashed over for a converted try to give Biloela a 12-5 lead.

Biloela was unlucky not to add to this score with Kunabure, Aaron Barnard and Josh Harris creating breaks that was covered by excellent defence.

The Drovers narrowed Biloela's lead with a converted try to again level the scores 12-12.

Biloela scored the final try of the half when Kunabure again made a break down the wing before linking with Aaron Barnard who scored an unconverted try to give Biloela a 17-12 lead at the half time break.

The second half was an arm wrestle with neither team willing to give up in a close struggle based on strong defence and missed opportunities from both sides.

Biloela had two close calls go against them with Chris Dawson ruled to be held up under the goal posts and another opportunity to Cameron Curtis ruled to be a forward pass.

The Drovers were also unlucky to have a try disallowed with the player ruled to be held up over the line.

Biloela extended their lead with a penalty goal to Marcus Costar to 20-12.

Drovers continued to fight and were rewarded with a try in the closing minutes to narrow the gap to 20-17.

That remained the final score as Biloela recorded a narrow victory.

Biloela's best on the day were Patty Smith, Marcus Costar and man of the match was Chris Dawson.

The player's player was awarded Ian Noone who made an excellent return from injury.

All teams have a bye this weekend for the British and Irish Lion's test before Biloela plays Brothers in Rockhampton.
