Bowditch finds range in Texas

THE Sunshine Coast's Steven Bowditch is in line to secure his maiden US PGA Tour win and fulfil his dream of appearing at next week's Masters.

The Peregian Beach-based golfer shared second place yesterday at the halfway point of the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio.

The 29-year-old was the best of the Australians, at six under after carding successive rounds of three-under 69.

In typical Bowditch fashion, his round was filled with peaks and troughs - six birdies and three bogeys.

He was two shots behind the tournament leader, American Billy Horschel.

"That's sort of how I play at the moment," Bowditch said.

"It's been getting better - it's still inconsistent. I didn't hit the ball that great today but I just managed to miss it in the right places a lot of the time and get it up and down.

"I'm happy in the end."

Bowditch was tied for second with Americans Daniel Summerhays and Charley Hoffman.

The Queenslander's best career result was at the 2009 Pebble Beach Pro-Am, where he finished in a share of ninth - his only US PGA Tour top-10 finish.

Aside from the $US1.1 million winner's purse, Bowditch will qualify for Augusta if he prevails at TPC San Antonio.

Consistency is the concern - he has missed the cut at four of the eight US PGA events this year, his best result a tie for 29th.
