Broich claims Johnny Warren Medal

BRISBANE Roar star Thomas Broich said he was shocked after becoming the third foreign player in a row to win the Johnny Warren Medal on Tuesday night.

The German played just 17 games out of 27 this season but still managed to poll more votes (390) than teammate Besart Berisha (252), and Melbourne Victory's Archie Thompson who finished third on 243.

"I'm honestly totally surprised. I was injured for a lot of the season and it's not easy to come back from injury," said Broich, who suffered heel and shoulder injuries in the campaign.

"To get this award is totally unexpected ... I'm very grateful."

Broich followed in the footsteps of fellow international imports, Costa Rican Carlos Hernandez who won the medal in 2009-10, while last year's recipient was Argentine Marcos Flores who has been linked with the proposed new team for Western Sydney.

Berisha won the coveted golden boot for his 19 A-League goals this season.
