THE community needs to rally together in order to prevent the privatisation of Queensland's assets.

That's the message from Services Union secretary Neil Henderson, who has been behind its NOT4SALE campaign.

Last night the community delivered, with nearly 50 residents from Rockhampton and Yeppoon turning out to a campaign meeting.

The State Government is looking at leasing Queensland ports and electricity generators, including Stanwell power station.

The money from the privatisation was said to go to reducing the state's $80 billion debt.

Mr Henderson said that the Newman Government made it clear that it sees the next election as the referendum.

"A sale or lease, the outcome is the same for workers whose jobs will be jeopardised," Mr Henderson said.

"Communities will suffer economic loss including the ongoing income from the assets which is a couple of billion dollars a year from power assets."

Mr Henderson said that the community needed to realise that the only way they could convince the government to change its mind, was to change the government.

"There's no confidence at the moment that the community can win, but they want to win," he said.

Mr Henderson said the consequences of privatisation were too dire.
