Capricornia MP claims CFMEU bullied her family at Blackwater

JUST over a year since the federal election, Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry has broken her silence about alleged threats made against her family.

Ms Landry on Tuesday claimed she had been the subject of bullying by coal mining union CFMEU.

She said this extended to her daughter and son-in-law, who were living and working in Blackwater, Central Queensland's mining heartland, at the time of her political campaign.

As a consequence, Ms Landry said the couple had since quit their jobs and left town. "I haven't come out and said anything about it previously because they were still living there," she said.

"It was dreadful. I'm the one doing the job, I'm the public figure. They shouldn't be picking on your family."

Ms Landry said she had not made a complaint to the police or the union at the time, as she felt it would only exacerbate the problem.

"I'm not against unions," she said.

"There is a place for them, but they shouldn't be pushing their ideals down other people's necks."

CFMEU's Stephen Smyth said the "baseless allegations" had come as a complete surprise.

"To suddenly come out with this, without bringing it to the attention of the union or the police... I just don't understand it," he said.

"We fight against bullying everyday and do not condone it, so we're actually really offended by her comments."
