Caving in, hotel facing bulldozer

FIRST the historic Anchor Hotel was gutted, then brightly painted and stuffed with flashy bathroom ware.

Then the Music Bowl was closed.

Now Rockhampton's musicians have been kicked down once again as the Grand Hotel's Cave Bar is destined to close next month and the pub may even be bulldozed.

The music scene will again mourn a beloved venue after the final gig is held at the popular themed venue on Saturday before the watering hole closes on April 11.

Lockjaw singer Scot Treacy yesterday said the Cave Bar was the last resort for a dedicated music venue in the city and its demise was disastrous.

Grand Hotel manager Clyde Williams was the town's only publican willing and eager to host regular all-ages live music events, giving the youth of Rockhampton a safe haven.

Now musos and gig organisers are at a loss to find a place where bands can play that isn't a residential house or hall that generates noise complaints.

Clyde yesterday said he had no trouble with the young crowd over the last three years since the Cave Bar was established, and he would like to see a pub take over.

"I think other pubs should be getting them (bands) in.

They were a good crowd and good patrons," he said.

"I'm going to get up and thank them all for supporting the pub.

"I'm going to be sad, especially when closing up."

The cave-like surroundings will be gone, but the memories and music will live on.

THE CAVE BAR

  • Established as dedicated original music bar, 2009.
  • Held regular local & national bands
  • Only venue with regular all-ages gigs
