Christensen: 70% chance Kevin Rudd will be Prime Minister

FEDERAL LNP Member for Dawson George Christensen says there is a 70% chance Kevin Rudd will be Prime Minister by the end of the week.

Mr Christensen says a former Labor Minister and firm backer of Mr Rudd had told him Mr Rudd had the numbers to be elected as party leader if a ballot was called.

His comments come as rumours circulate that a petition will be circulated today to gauge support for Mr Rudd.

Mr Christensen says an "eerie calm" has settled over Canberra.

"The mood is bizarre," he says.

"It seems to be an eerie calm before the storm.

"These guys are honestly completely focused on this issue and meanwhile we've been trying to put on the debate on the carbon tax (price) going up on July 1... but they've knocked that on the head."

But Labor candidate for Dawson Bronwyn Taha says Mr Christensen needs to spend more time focussing on issues directly affecting the people of Dawson.

"George Christensen has his own opinion and he should be concentrating on his electorate," she says.

"I'm focussing my campaign in Dawson on what Labor has delivered in the last seven years.

"We have a new Virgin Australia Stadium, a new basketball stadium in progress and Labor will deliver the Mackay Ring Road."
