Coles plans for Sam’s Warehouse still unclear

RUMOURS are rife that Coles has the green light to snatch up the vacant Sam's Warehouse for another supermarket in south Rockhampton.

But this week those rumours were dampened.

A Coles spokeswoman told The Morning Bulletin that the supermarket giant was assessing Sam's Warehouse to see if it was suitable to upgrade and renovate.

She said no decisions about the site had been made.

"With any potential developments, we want to ensure we work with the local community and with the council to provide a great supermarket, which creates local jobs, offers excellent value and supports Queensland food producers," she said.

Coles was also making a play for a new north-side shopping centre at the old WIN TV location in Dean St.

However, the spokeswoman said the proposal for the WIN TV site was a matter for the developer, who was still waiting for feedback from Rockhampton Regional Council.

The supermarket giant makes $64 million in sales in the Rockhampton region with Woolworths raking in $187m (excluding Gracemere).

A report into the Dean St project says annual average sales per square metre for Coles in Rockhampton are $12,997 while for Woolworths it's $20,123.

It claimed Woolworth's sales were "over trading" at the top of an acceptable range of turnover while a good average per square metre was between $10,000 and $12,000.
