TROY Ahern doesn't want your pity or sympathy; he just wants a job.

The ex-mine worker on Friday said he had finally put his life back together after a long battle with alcoholism, but was now struggling to find employment.

"After my separation from my partner I took things very hard and that's when I started drinking," Troy, a father of five, said.

"I want to be a better role model and the role model my children deserve. While I am not working how can I be?

"I have picked myself up and gotten help... I've made my mistakes and I own them."

Troy, who said he would be willing to accept any type of job, has a decade of experience on drill and blast mine sites.

He said after so many rejections it was hard to see the good in himself, but still described himself as a trustworthy, reliable and honest employee.

After losing his job, Troy this year filed for bankruptcy and lost his home; but it isn't just employment Troy is chasing.

"My main aim here is for people needing help, especially males, is to listen to your family and friends and don't feel belittled by asking for it," he said.

"Drop the stigma that surrounds it and ask.

"Your life isn't defined by your faults... it's defined by picking yourself up and moving forward."

Troy's dream would be to score an apprenticeship, but said anything that pays would be just fine.
