Kids' park safe from drug users
SERGEANT Peter Harding yesterday stepped in to assure families who used the popular Elphinstone St playground their safety was a top priority.
Sgt Harding said police had increased patrols of the area in North Rockhampton.
On Monday The Bulletin carried a report from a concerned parent who found used syringes and condom wrappers near an enclosed area close to the playground.
Sgt Harding, the acting officer-in-charge of the North Rockhampton station, said as a result of concerns raised by the community police would increase uniformed and specialist unit patrols throughout the day and night.
He said the biggest concern was trying to prevent children from wandering near the enclosed area.
"Families can feel safe coming to the playground," he said.
"There have been no drug items in the playground area, which is heavily frequented by young families enjoying the facilities, but it is a short distance to the undercover area where drug items have been found.
"Just recently this has been part of our patrol area but has not received the focus that it will now receive."
Anyone who sees any suspicious behaviour in the Elphinstone St park area is urged to call the North Rockhampton station on 4932 6262 or police link on 131 444.
