2.20pm: THE Bruce Highway has been closed north of Rockhampton due to a fire.
Multiple Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) crews are on the scene of a large vegetation fire on the Bruce Highway, about two kilometres south of Ilbilbie (near Mackay).
It is believed at least five rural crews are on scene.
Firefighters were called to the fire around 1pm and are completing backburning to contain the fire, which is causing a large amount of smoke in the area.
No properties are currently under threat. Residents who suffer from or are susceptible to respiratory illness are advised to remain indoors and keep their doors and windows shut.
Motorists travelling within the area are advised to drive to conditions due to smoke haze.
If residents feel their home is under threat, they should ring Triple Zero (000) immediately.
