Good Samaritan faces court after helping drunk stranger

THE luck of the Irish was against a Rockhampton man who tried to assist a fellow party-goer but found himself before a Magistrate yesterday.

Rockhampton Magistrates Court heard Irish expat Sean Martin Gollogan was trying to help an unconscious stranger up off the sidewalk after a night out at Zodiac nightclub on September 26.

The 29-year-old pleaded guilty to one count of obstructing police in the vicinity of a licensed premises after his good deed got in the way of police on the scene.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Manon Barwick said the intoxicated man was not known to the defendant.

"Police told the defendant his help was appreciated but not required," Snr Const Barwick said.

The scaffolder was told to move away three times.

Gollogan told Magistrate Jeff Clarke he had two drinks before the incident.

"He was lying on the path and I was trying to give him water because if he stood up he would have been better off, I would think," Gollogan said.

Mr Clarke told Gollogan it was "best to leave police to do their job".

Gollogan was sentenced to a two-month good behaviour bond with no conviction recorded.
