Happy little Vegemites
CATHERINE Vandeleur was a happy little Vegemite when she performed in the first section of Rockhampton's 77th Eisteddfod for 2012 yesterday.
Suited up in her life-size cardboard Vegemite jar costume, the 11-year-old recited the stages in the life of the popular Australian spread.
"How Vegemite gets made, from the factory to the supermarket," Catherine said when she explained her act.
"I say 'if you think Vegemite has a very boring life, it doesn't'."
After five years participating with her twin sister, Elizabeth, in Rockhampton Eisteddfods, from speech and drama to singing, piano and flute performances, Catherine knew her way about the Pilbeam Theatre stage.
"My mum and dad wanted me to learn how to speak in public," Catherine said.
"And I really enjoy it."
While yesterday's Eisteddfod saw costume and poem recitals, and Shakespearean excerpts, tomorrow youngsters will compete in verse-speaking choirs, followed by more costume and poem recitals.
More than 7000 youngsters from across Central Queensland will participate in the popular eisteddfod as it continues throughout May and finishes with a gala concert on Sunday, June 2.
Organiser Dr Les Killion said the unmissable concert would feature performances from major bursary winners and items selected by adjudicators for entertainment value.
