Homeless man jailed for spending $400 on stolen card

BEING homeless was the last straw for Rockhampton man Kevin John Ryan.

So he decided to go all-out and take up a shopping spree using a credit card he stole from a Rockhampton woman working for Queensland Health.

Clad in baggy blue prison uniform, Ryan, 33, shuffled into the Rockhampton Magistrates Court and pleaded guilty to several fraud charges, entering a dwelling and committing an offence, trespassing, contravening a police order and obstructing a police officer.

The court heard in the early hours of Wednesday morning, Ryan entered a Queensland Health office at The Range.

Police Prosecutor Clancy Fox said Ryan entered and stole an iPhone, a Colorado wallet, Commonwealth Bank credit cards and a red handbag.

At 2am on Wednesday he bought $38 worth of KFC.

Several hours later, at 10.41am, he decided he wanted to wash down his meal with a 24-pack of XXXX Gold and other liquor, the total of which came to more than $70.

He entered a BWS liquor store and made his transaction.

Just before this purchase, he bought almost $60 worth of Optus mobile credit.

On Wednesday night, Ryan was spotted at the Allenstown Hotel.

Mr Fox said when Ryan noticed the police moving in on him, he bolted from the hotel and entered a random house in Canning St.

Ryan entered through the lower level of the house and hid inside a bathroom, where police cuffed him before he was transported to the Rockhampton Watchhouse.

The 33-year-old was on parole.

His defence lawyer Shayne Studdert said Ryan was purely motivated by his homelessness.

Magistrate Cameron Press ordered he pay a total of $455.25 restitution to the woman.

He was sentenced to six months imprisonment and will be eligible for parole on October 28.
