Horse trainer found with dangerous drugs in stables

A ROCKHAMPTON horse trainer who was caught with methamphetamine and drug utensils in stables at Callaghan Park in January has been fined $1250 in Rockhampton Magistrates Court.

The court heard on November 30 that during a routine search of the stable being used by Nathan John Schofield a steward discovered a sunglasses case filled with drug utensils.

Police prosecutor Danita Clarke told the court the steward found a pipe, a used needle and syringe and a bag with less than 0.1g of a white crystal substance, or methamphetamine.

Schofield told police he had used the drug utensils days prior.

Defence lawyer Joanne Madden said Schofield had since given up his horse training licence.

"He had a wake-up call and realised what he put at risk," she said.

"He is no longer using drugs in any shape or form."

Schofield, 39, pleaded guilty to possessing a dangerous drug, possessing utensils used in the commission of a crime under the drugs misuse act, possessing anything used in the connection of smoking a dangerous drug and failing to dispose of a needle.

No convictions were recorded.
