If the cap doesn't fit, NRL clubs may not have to wear it
NRL officials will meet with representatives of the Rugby League Players Association today to discuss the possibility of increasing the 2013 salary cap which has been set at $5 million.
In the wake of the game's $1 billion broadcast rights deal, players want a bigger slice of the pie, threatening to boycott February's All Stars game and media commitments.
Increasing the cap would be great news for Parramatta which is trying to work out how to fit Israel Folau into its budget, and also Manly which can't have star full back Brett Stewart's contract registered unless it cuts players worth $300,000.
NRL interim CEO Shane Mattiske said it was important for the League to be able to accommodate returning stars like Folau and Sonny Bill Williams.
"We want to see Israel come into the game. It's very positive that we've got players like Israel and Sonny Bill coming back to the game and wanting to play rugby league," Mattiske said.
Bulldogs chief executive Todd Greenberg will attend the meeting on behalf of the NRL clubs.
