IT SEEMED the eyes of the world were on Rockhampton earlier this year, with the floods that devastated the region making headlines in even the most unlikely countries.

But it would seem that as big as the floods were, they failed to generate the interest that planking or the rumoured iPhone 5 did, according to the results of Google's newly published Zeitgeist list.

The annual Zeitgeist (German for 'the spirit of the times') details google.com.au's top searches and the findings offer an interesting glimpse into the big events, memorable moments and emerging trends that captivated us throughout 2011.

While the floods failed to make any of the search lists, the threat of another Queensland natural disaster, Cyclone Yasi, in late January created enough interest to propel it to number three in the fastest rising searches category, after the iPhone 5 and video game Minecraft.

Despite the disastrous weather that plagued Queensland in the early part of the year, interest in the State as a tourist destination remained (perhaps thanks to an intense advertising campaign) with Hamilton Island, Hayman Island, Port Douglas, and the Great Barrier Reef all making the top-10 holiday destination search list.

British songstress Adele made two of the most-searched lists in Australia while celebrity trainer Michelle Bridges was the only Aussie-born person to make any of the lists.
