JACK Austin is flying high after landing his first job in the Rockhampton Hospital Emergency Department.

The CQUniversity nursing graduate, who is also a trained pilot on the side, is set to have his first day this month.

Jack was part of a massive cohort of students who chose to enrol in the course, with the degree placed as the university's most popular program nationwide.

The graduate said he knew he wanted to become a nurse after visiting a Careers Expo while he was still a student at Emmaus College.

Jack saw the Queensland Health stall, and the rest is history.

"I have loved it every single day since being enrolled," he said.

"Nursing will be one of those degrees that will always offer up new ideas and new things that you could never expect.

"Everyone gets sick, everyone needs health care. It is an industry that will always offer up a job and I am so happy I chose it."

During his time at CQUniversity, Jack found himself completing a medical placement in Nepal.

It was this experience, he said, that taught him just how much potential could be found within a nursing career.

And with the next round of high school students receiving the results of their university applications today, Jack left them with some advice from the other side.

"If you don't get the preference you want, there are so many other avenues to get around it," he said.

"The whole OP fear is something that is kind of outdated now, and a lot of kids probably worry about that too much.

"The first year of uni is tough for everyone... but most of the time you're going to love it."
