Lyn has her feathers ruffled over macaw deaths at zoo

WHEN Jimmy the macaw died after the cyclone caused a tree to fall on his cage, Lyn Laskus wasn't happy.

Now Jimmy's partner in crime, Jeannie, has been constricted by a python three months later at the Rockhampton Zoo, and Lyn is furious.

The animal activist told The Bulletin both deaths were avoidable.

Lyn said she was furious the birds, which were donated to the zoo in 2012, weren't taken care of properly during Cyclone Marcia.

"The birds could've been put inside boxes and placed in cyclone-proof buildings," she said.

Lyn, who has been caring for native birds for more than 30 years, claims the macaws would have been fine for 24 hours in a large box to keep them calm during the cyclone.

"A box simulates nightfall and puts the bird at rest; then they could've made their temporary pens snake-proof," she said.

"(Council) should've been aware their temporary environment was attractive to snakes."

Rockhampton Regional Council CEO Evan Pardon told the Bulletin all enclosures and animals were safely secured prior to the cyclone arriving.

"Unfortunately, in this particular situation, it was very difficult to move animals and guarantee 100% safety," Mr Pardon said.

"Our zoo staff are very dedicated, extremely competent and qualified; they have worked tirelessly to ensure all the animals settled back into their routines after the cyclone."
