Malcolm Turnbull: We'll welcome Central American refugees

PRIME Minister Malcolm Turnbull says Australia will start accepting refugees from Central America to make up some of the 18,750 who will come to Australia in 2018-2019.

The Prime Minister made the comments as he addressed the United Nations General Assembly in New York, aimed to addressing the 65.3 million people displaced internationally.

His announcement follows US plans to re-settle refugees fleeing violence in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.
Australia is vowing to help with the resettlements.

"We will also participate in the US-led program to re-settle Central American refugees currently in a re-settlement centre in Costa Rica," he said.

"Australians support these actions because they have confidence that our migration system is well managed."

Australia's funding for refugees will increase by $130 million over three years.

Former PM Tony Abbott pushed up the refugee intake from 13,750, but Mr Turnbull's comments now make clear that the change is permanent.
