Man escaped custody through police car window

THE SAME man police caught hiding under a foam mattress in a stranger's garage at Wandal escaped out a police car window and led a foot chase down Bolsover St, Rockhampton Magistrates Court heard on Monday.

John Micheal Doyle pleaded guilty to six charges after he sent police on a 140m pursuit when he climbed out the window while police were stopped at an intersection on November 23.

The court heard the 28-year-old was caught attempting to steal from the Wandal address and took refuge under a foam mattress when the home owner called police.

Police prosecutor Clancy Fox told the court Doyle wound down the police car window while being transported to the watch house.

Doyle was also charged for stealing a backpack containing clothes and personal items from a vehicle at Gracemere on May 29 last year.

Police caught up with Doyle again in October when they found a syringe in his pants.

"He told police he used it to administer speed earlier that day and he did not have a sharps container available," Mr Fox said.

Defence lawyer Shayne Studdert told the court all six offences were linked to Doyle's use of drugs and alcohol.

"This is the first time he appears in court with the viewpoint 'I have I have a drug and alcohol problem, can you help me'," he said.

Doyle pleaded guilty to one count each of contravening a requirement of police, entering a premises with intent to commit an offence, attempting to steal from a dwelling, obstructing police, possessing a utensil used in connection witha dangerous drug and failing to properly dispose of a needle.

"If you have a drug problem, which I think you do, avail yourself of this opportunity to do something about it," magistrate Cameron Press told Doyle.

Doyle was sentenced to six months in prison for the offence at Gracemere, suspended for an operational period of 18 months and six months in prison with immediate parole for the offence committed at Wandal.

He was fined $300 for obstructing police and sentenced to 12 months' probation for the two drug-related charges.
