IN another disturbing case of domestic violence, an 18-year-old man was sentenced yesterday to two and a half years' jail for hitting his girlfriend with a metal fence post.
The Woorabinda man pleaded guilty in the Rockhampton District Court to one count of grievous bodily harm and four counts of assault.
The two were drinking at home on August 17 last year when they became involved in an argument over their baby girl, who had recently passed away.
When the woman accused the man of being a poor father he dragged her around the house, bashed her head on the ground and struggled over a knife with her. After she locked him out of the house, he used a metal fence post to break down the door and strike her, fracturing her arm.
Judge Paul Smith said while the man was provoked, his response was entirely unwarranted. "Women in Woorabinda and every other place deserve the protection of the courts against violence from their partners," he said.
The man's sentence will be suspended after six months. He was also sentenced to two years' probation.
