Medical board to make decision on Dr Vega Vega’s future

THE decision to revoke a Rockhampton urologist's medical registration after he allegedly botched four surgeries could come as early as today.

Dr Antonio Vega Vega was suspended from his role at Rockhampton Hospital on April 29.

He has been accused of removing the wrong kidney from a patient, misdiagnosing a twisted testicle leading to its removal, nicking an artery, and inserting a stent in the wrong place.

Dr Vega Vega is still able to practice privately, but he has voluntarily stepped down from his roles at the Gladstone and Rockhampton Mater hospitals and Hillcrest hospital.

The Medical Board of Australia and Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency are assessing whether to revoke his registration.

Rockhampton police CIB Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Moon is assessing whether it is a police matter.

Det Snr Sgt Moon said he understood it was standard practice.
