Mother leaves 5-year-old home alone to workout at ‘gym’

HOME alone with no one to protect him from an attacker, Stacey Jane Taylor's son, 5, was left on his own while "mum went to the gym".

The Allenstown woman pleaded guilty in the Rockhampton Magistrates Court yesterday to one count of leaving a child for an unreasonable time without making provisions for supervision.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Shaun Janes said police officers attended Taylor's Canning St house at 8.20am on March 22 in relation to a separate matter.

The court heard Taylor witnessed a disturbance in a separate incident and the police were visiting her as part of their investigation.

When the officers arrived at Taylor's house they knocked on the door for some time.

A young boy, whom the police officers suspected was home by himself, answered the door and allowed the police to enter his mum's house.

The officers confirmed their suspicions when they quickly searched the house and found no one else there.

About 20 minutes after they arrived at Taylor's house, she returned home.

Snr Const Janes said the police officers again tried to contact Taylor about four days later about leaving her son home alone but the call rang through to the voice message service.

The same thing happened on subsequent occasions.

Snr Const Janes told the court Taylor often left her son home alone while she was at the gym.

Instead of contacting the police, Taylor tried to let the matter slide saying she believed the police should better invest their time "chasing real criminals".

She declined to take part in a formal interview on August 10.

Duty lawyer Joanne Madden said the incident was a one-off for her client.

The court heard Taylor was a single mother with a full-time job.

Ms Madden said her client's son was always being looked after, when his mother wasn't around, by Taylor's sister during the week and the boy's father at the weekends.

Magistrate Michael O'Driscoll reminded Taylor that she had indeed committed a serious criminal offence.

He fined her $500.
