Dead mother had violent criminal history

A DEAD mother's five-year criminal history, which included a conviction for kicking a police officer in the groin, was yesterday revealed on day six of a murder trial in Rockhampton.

Rockhampton Supreme Court heard solid evidence from a Gladstone detective about the violent criminal history of Roxane Gilbert, whose son Horace Lorenzo Jones is accused of murdering her with a samurai sword and steak knife in 2012.

Jones, 21, has pleaded not guilty to murder.

Gladstone CIB officer Detective Senior Constable Kurt Rabnott took to the witness stand to reveal several violent offences Ms Gilbert had been charged and convicted for.

Ms Gilbert, who lived in Bundaberg, had been sentenced to imprisonment for six months in 2006, for a serious assault and a string of other offences.

Det Snr Const Rabnott told the court when Ms Gilbert was in custody on April 21, 2006, she grabbed a police officer by the throat and started choking him.

On July 25, 2005, Ms Gilbert was charged with obstructing police officers in the performance of their duties.

The charge related to an incident where Ms Gilbert tried to swim away from police officers who were trying to arrest her in Gladstone.

The court also heard during another encounter with Gladstone Police, that Ms Gilbert ripped a singlet off an officer.

Ms Gilbert had a substantial criminal history from 2001 to 2006, the court heard.

Det Snr Const Rabnott told the court on several occasions where police had dealt with Ms Gilbert, she was under the influence of alcohol.

The Crown Prosecution yesterday delivered its summary of the trial and closing statement.

The jury is expected to deliberate their verdict today.
