No swell time on horizon, but perfect nonetheless

IT'S not looking good for the weekend wave warriors, with a small and decreasing swell and the winds to head to the east and then the north.

But it is great beach weather and the water is clean and warm, so grab your biggest lump of foam and enjoy.

It looks like there will be a bit of a pulse early next week, with the chance of something more substantial after that.

Here's hoping it coincides with the Tide 'N' Turn Australia Day Classic at Agnes Water on - yes, Australia Day, Saturday, January 26.

The contests kick off in a big way next month with the Breaka Burleigh Pro on the Gold Coast.

And then it's on during March with the Reef2Beach Longboard Classic in Agnes Water, the Noosa Festival of Surfing and the Quiksilver Pro at Snapper.

The Burleigh Pro has established itself as a fixture on the contest calendar, with many of the world tour pros using it as a warm-up for the Quikie Pro.

"It's always fun to compete around home," two-time world champ Mick Fanning said. "Burleigh is a great wave, so hopefully we get the swell."

Coolum's Julian Wilson won it last year, defeating Fanning in the final, but WA's Taj Burrow won it twice in 2010 and 2011.

Burrow is red-hot on the Goldie having also won the Quiksilver Pro in 2010 and last year - so he has to be the man to watch coming into the 2013 world championship.

The progressive natural-footer has been in the top 10 for 15 years, finishing runner-up twice, third twice and fourth an amazing five times.

Like last year's winner, Joel Parkinson, Burrow would be a sentimental favourite to grab a world crown before he bows out. At 33, he can still keep pace with the new flyboys.

This year the world tour has nine events after the Coldwater Classic in the US fell off the tour after just one year and Jefferys Bay in South Africa has failed to return after its shock demotion to a WQS event last year.

That it is not even on the WQS circuit in 2013 is a travesty seeing the famed right-hand point break is considered one of the best in the world.
