THE National Rugby League boss has assured the region that Central Queensland is vitally important in the future of rugby league.

NRL boss Dave Smith spent the past two days in Rockhampton, speaking with the CQ NRL bid board, corporate leaders and supporters.

CQ NRL Bid CEO Denis Keeffe said despite no commitments being made during the visit, it was the best few days the bid team has had in recent years.

"(Dave) said he now sees and understands Central Queensland like he didn't before," Keeffe said.

"What counts is that he sees the absolute commitment we have to our end goal which is to get a team in CQ and he sees a passion for the game.

"He does understand our compelling argument (for an NRL team)."

On top of a stronger relationship formed with the NRL boss, Keeffe said they now understood where the NRL was at this point in time.

"(Dave) can't disclose a lot of the information because he doesn't have it," Keeffe said.

The CQ NRL bid CEO said that Smith had only been in the job for 18 months and hadn't had time to look in to whether or not the NRL needed to expand, relocate, or establish new clubs.

"(Securing an NRL team) will happen, but we don't know when; Dave and the NRL have been that busy," Keeffe said.

The visit did leave Smith with a good sense of the region.

He told Keeffe that he felt really welcome in Rockhampton and was overwhelmed by the hospitality.
