Rockhampton drivers are the ‘worst in Oz’ - WA grandfather

ROCKHAMPTON is the last place Morris Reid wants his grandson to perform a practical test for his driver's licence.

Mr Reid, who hailed from the Western Australia town of Albany, believed Rockhampton roads were death traps because the drivers who used them were "among the worst in the country".

Mr Reid, a 66-year-old road train driver, spoke out about the city's apparent driving stigma.

For the past five years, he and his wife have done the national circuit in their caravan; travelling to almost every Australia town and city you can think of.

He and his wife have grandchildren in Rockhampton, so they visit the region regularly.

"All these years I have been on the road, I have been accident free; and out of the many towns I have visited, there is only one that frightens me - Rockhampton," he said.

Yesterday, Mr Reid slammed Rocky motorists saying drivers were "without a doubt the most dangerous in the country".

"Their total disregard for traffic rules and other drivers is astounding," he said.

"Traffic lights are only an inconvenience to them (local drivers); green means keep speeding, orange means go faster and red means stop if you feel like it.

"There's not one day I drive around Rockhampton when I don't see or have a near-miss. No wonder there is such a high accident rate here."

Mr Reid was dead against his 16-year-old grandson learning how to drive in Rockhampton. He claimed part of the problem related to lack of traffic control.

"Please do something about this town of kamikaze drivers before more people are killed or injured in this lovely city."
