September date for B-double traffic controller death case

A TRUCK driver accused of hitting and killing a traffic controller appeared in the Rockhampton District Court yesterday.

Thomas Richard White, 59, represented himself as the matter was briefly mentioned.

It is alleged White was excessively speeding and not paying due attention when he approached a section of road works on the Bruce Hwy near Marlborough on January 16 last year.

A 64-year-old Brisbane woman, who was on "stop-go" duty, was struck by the semi B-double driven by White about 4.30pm.

She was pronounced dead on the scene.

White was charged in relation to the incident following police investigations.

The matter is listed for trial on September 22.

Yesterday, prosecutor Dean Jones said he opposed the trial being moved to a later date.

"The deceased's family want it dealt with," he said.

White told the court he had not worked since July last year.

He said he had applied for legal aid and had an appointment with a solicitor next week.

Judge Brian Devereaux ordered the trial date remain the same for now.

The matter was adjourned for mention next month.
