THEY attracted national attention when they arrived at the Melbourne Cup, but they aren't jockeys, horse owners or celebrities.

It was the fashion worn by former Rockhampton girls Anna and Amelia Vivash that turned heads at the prestigious event, for obvious reasons.

People lined up to take photos of the sisters and their colourful outfits, which they designed themselves.

Amelia, 19, designed and made the two-piece prawn-inspired outfit worn by Anna, 25, as well as her own outfit, including a Tamagotchi necklace, Barbie skirt and 'Mike Wazowski' shoulder pads.

She also sported a sandwich, a hamburger, a Dr Pepper can and a variety of fruit over her turquoise and orange locks.

Anna also created her own millinery, featuring an upturned ice cream cone.

But Amelia almost didn't make the event, only deciding the day before to purchase a ticket.

But she's glad she booked the last-minute flight, after receiving coverage from Channel 7, 9, 10, the ABC and even SBS World News.

Since leaving Rockhampton, Amelia has had success in the world of fashion design after being accepted to the Whitehouse Institute of Design in Sydney.

She has also been accepted to study at Central Saint Martin's College of Art and Design, a prestigious London university whose alumni include famous designers such as Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen.

Anna's outfit is modelled on a design Amelia is using for both her college presentation and in a collection for RAW Sydney, a showcase of emerging artists in fashion, music, visual and performing arts.
