SMALL business operators Nathan Dale and Glen King were named overnight as Australia's Young Small Business Champion Entrepreneur and Small Business Champion Entrepreneur.

The awards were made at the Australian Small Business Champion Awards in Sydney, attended by Minister for Small Business Brendan O'Connor.

"All small business operators are champions, but among a field of excellence these two winners really stand out," Mr O'Connor said.

"I am very impressed with the drive these two winners have shown.

"Nathan Dale has grown Intact Group, a Sydney-based property and facilities management business, from just three employees in 2007 to an operation with major clients in two states and offering Indigenous employment opportunities in regional Australia.

"Glen King has spent 18 years building King's Fibreglass from a backyard business to a modern and innovative business at Bayswater in Victoria."

Almost 1,000 small businesses attended last night's awards.

Mr Connor said it was important that the sector took time out to recognise and celebrate its champions.

"I'd like to congratulate Steve Loe of Precedent Productions for organising this magnificent small business event," Mr O'Connor said.

"Our two million small business owners work incredible hours with incredible focus. They provide jobs for around five million Australians and contribute over a third of the total industry value added that is generated in our economy.

"The Gillard Government recognises the importance of small business to our economy and is determined to create the environment in which it can thrive.

"That's why we are cutting the company tax rate for small business from 30 cents to 29 cents from July 1 and introducing instant asset tax write-offs for assets worth up to $6,500 each to free up cash flow for small operators.

"We are also establishing the first Australian Small Business Commissioner to give small business a louder voice in government, and we have a range of initiatives and programs to reduce red tape, boost cash flow and provide easy access to information."

Mr O'Connor spent three days meeting small businesses in Brisbane, Ipswich and the Northern Rivers region last week and said he looked forward to meeting more small business operators and organisations around the country.
