Thief desperate, drunk, and dumb
IT COULD have been the worst thought-out robbery for the least amount of money.
An apparently drunk and desperate father-of-two threw a wheelie bin through Tegan's Nail and Beauty Bar's front door on Alexandra St yesterday before 5am.
He burst into the beauty shop, on a busy Rockhampton intersection frequented by early morning joggers and dog-walkers, and grabbed the till.
The couple living next door were awakened by their dog's barks and the clunking of their wheelie bin being taken even before the man entered the shop.
Their 35-year-old son, who was visiting them, went to investigate the noise and found the man casually walking away from the shop with the till.
When he confronted the man a chase ensued for about four blocks, but the thief was no match for his pursuer, not surprisingly as he was training for a marathon.
The thief finally threw the till away, apologising to the man and explaining he was 22, had two children and stealing was the only way he could feed his family.
The woman living next door said the man told her son everything but his name before hearing police sirens and running away.
Owner of the shop, Tegan Davis, said the robber must not have even looked into the till.
"It only had $20 in change," she said.
"Even if [his situation] is true I think that's pathetic.
"He's 22, it's not like he's not able to work. And now I have to pay an excess of $200."
Ms Davis said the man evaded police capture.
"People should be aware of what's happening," she said.
