WE SAY: Dangers of magpie attack no joke

Magpie attacks are no laughing matter when lives are put at risk
Magpie attacks are no laughing matter when lives are put at risk

WE ALL have a bit of a chuckle when we see someone flailing their arms about, trying to escape from those pesky magpies.

But I think we all need to be a bit more aware of the dangers that can come from a magpie attack.

A Rockhampton man is counting his lucky stars this weekend after narrowly avoiding being hit by a truck after a magpie attack saw him stumble into traffic.

The story, explains how a truck driver believed the man had fallen off his bike after the attack, hit his head, and stumbled into peak hour traffic.

We don't think about those dangers when we see someone under attack on the footpath. We usually just think, "thank God it didn't happen to me", and we avoided that embarrassment.

But I think when someone is having trouble with magpies, maybe it's time to step in and see if they're okay. This man had come off his bike, hit his head and was dazed, which is a pretty serious injury to me. It also must be said that the truck driver and others did an amazing job ensuring no one else was injured.

There are so many instances when these birds can cause a dangerous situation, especially with bike riders on the road.

So I think we need to cut out the laughter when it comes to magpie attacks. If you can't avoid magpie areas then make sure your fellow bike rider or walker is okay and safe.

As for me, I'll be staying clear of the birds on my walks, or might even opt for the gym to avoid a swooping situation. And I'll definitely be taking the car and give the bike a few weeks off.
