Welfare group protests against circus at Redbank

AN ANIMAL welfare group will stage a protest outside the circus set up at Redbank.

Animal Liberation Queensland is expecting about 40 protestors outside the Lennon Bros big top opposite Redbank Plaza on Saturday afternoon.

The organisation is protesting the circus's use of three lions in the show saying "keeping lions in cages is not okay".

Cheryl Lennon, manager for Lennon Bros Circus, says it won't be the first time a protest has been staged at one of their events and the group is welcome to express their opinion.

But she says the 14-year-old, 200 kilo lions that travel with the circus are kept in conditions that exceed the State Government's requirements and are treated like royalty.

"These lions have been bred in captivity, do you want to put them back into the wild so they can be poached?" Ms Lennon said.

"The lions spend most of the day asleep, have access to outside yard areas and their cages are larger than the laws call for," Ms Lennon says.

In the wild lions only live to between 10 to 14 years, however, in captivity they can live up to 30 years.

The protest will be held from 3pm opposite the Redbank Plaza.
