Anna Meares' first woman to go under 33 seconds in event

CENTRAL Queensland golden girl Anna Meares claimed gold in the 500m time trial in a world record time of 32.836, making her the first woman in history to go under 33 seconds in the event.

Racing at the Mexico Track World Cup on Saturday, Meares eclipsed her own world record posted at the Melbourne World Championships in 2012 (33.010) to again write herself into the history books.

"I just wanted it, I wanted it really badly," Meares said after the race.

"It's really weird, it's taken me nearly 10 years to improve just over a second in the discipline. In Athens in 2004 I was 20 years old and became the first women to ride a sub-34 (33.952) and now, 10 years later at 30 years of age, I'm the first to ride a sub-33.

"I am just so proud."

Meares took out the event ahead of German Miriam Welte (33.062) and reigning world champion, Hong Kong's Wai Sze Lee (33.296).

"It's a huge milestone," the dual Olympic gold medallist said. "Not just for me, but for the sport. I knew that (posting a sub-33 time) was going to be possible on this track because of the altitude, especially considering how close I got to that time at the world titles in Melbourne in 2012.

"But I still appreciated it was going to be a hell of an effort, and I just had to make sure I got all of my technique right and do everything I could."

After sitting out the 2012-13 track season, Meares raced mid-field and waited for 10 riders to compete before learning her winning world record time would stand.
