Mother not sorry she threw baby in a rage

A ROCKHAMPTON mother was jailed yesterday for flinging her seven-week-old baby during a fit of rage.

She told police she threw her daughter like she would throw rubbish in a bin because she didn't want her anymore.

The 24-year-old, who is currently pregnant, had been visiting her child, who had already been taken into the protection of the Department of Child Safety.

She was attempting to bottle feed her, but the infant refused.

A child safety officer informed her that she had already been fed, which was why she probably wasn't eating more.

"So she threw the baby at the officer, who had to reach in the air and catch the child," police prosecutor Sergeant Darrell Dalton said.

Yesterday the woman, who cannot be named by law, pleaded guilty in Rockhampton Magistrates Court to six offences including common assault and serious assault during July and August. After the woman discarded her baby she then turned her anger to the child safety officer.

Sergeant Dalton said she backed the officer up to a wall and verbally abused her. He said she refused to leave and was very aggressive.

She later told police she didn't like the officer and said she wasn't remorseful for throwing her baby.

The woman was also charged with wilful damage, where she punched a car.

On August 14 she was arrested by police after trying to break into a Rockhampton home.

After her arrest she kicked through the perspex barrier of the police car and tried to attack the police driver. She used the seatbelt to try to choke the officer.

Acting Magistrate Mark Morrow sentenced the woman to six months prison, with a parole release date of December 24.
