INJURY may have stopped Jared Kearns riding bulls but it hasn't stopped him being a part of the action when the show comes to town.

Kearns is still in the ring but instead of trying to control the fury of 1000 kilograms of bucking bull he is diverting the attention of the beasts away from a fallen cowboy.

“My main attention is towards saving the cowboys,” the rookie bull fighter said.

“I just love doing it.”

While learning from the best, Kearns is forming a good partnership with Dean Berry.

“We work as a team, we have fun but when it's serious so are we,” he said.

Even though he has only taken over his new role of bull fighter, or protection athlete, during the past three months the 22-year-old has learned what the job is all about.

While much of the work is “routine”, protecting a fallen cowboy, he said there are moments when he has to get in quickly.

“It is serious when they (rider) get hung up,” he said.

That is the time when the cowboy gets his hand stuck and has to stay with a bull as it bucks and does its best to be rid of him.

“You also have to be pretty switched on when he is getting mauled,” he added.

Kearns, as a bull rider, had ambitions about where he wanted to go in the sport; now he has similar dreams for his new role.

“I wouldn't mind doing professional shows when I've learned a bit more,” he admitted.

Like most players in this tough sport he would also like that career path to lead to the United States.

In the meantime he intends to learn more about his craft and a part of that comes tonight when he protects the youngsters at the Young Guns Rodeo at the Great Western Arena.

Kearns has no plans for going in for the clowning side of bull fighting.
