IF Central Queensland wins a bid to have its own NRL team, Rockhampton's Colleen Sendon thinks The Central Queensland Bulls would be the ideal name.
Colleen, 59, yesterday put forward her preferred name for the team based on the Beef Capital's iconic bull statues.
“Bulls are a major icon in Rocky, so what better name than the Central Queensland Bulls?” Colleen said.
The CQ NRL bid campaign launch will be held in Rockhampton tomorrow.
For the NRL to award a licence to CQ, it would need to see plans for a stadium with a capacity of at least 25,000.
On Wednesday The Morning Bulletin revealed the city's premier sports venue, Browne Park, wouldn't be part of the plans.
However, one possible location for a super-stadium was identified by Mayor Brad Carter.
He will be at tomorrow's bid launch and the council has agreed to contribute $40,000 towards the bid, on condition that private sector sponsors put in as much during the bidding phase.
Carter suggested the junction of Yeppoon Road and Norman Road on the northern fringes of Rockhampton would be an ideal spot, providing the capacity needed to support a successful Premiership club.
Colleen, whose favourite NRL team is The Titans, said she was excited about the prospect of having a local NRL team.
“I like supporting local sport, and I enjoy tipping NRL,” she said.
Colleen said having a CQ team would be a great opportunity for the region's sporting arena. Rockhampton's Baron Large, who played for Fitzroy for 13 years, agreed with Colleen on naming the team the Central Queensland Bulls.
“The iconic bulls are all part of the area, and when people think of CQ, they think of the bulls,” Baron said.
Baron, who retired from playing league when he was 28, said he would love to see a CQ NRL team enter the competition.
The enthusiastic league supporter was Fitzroy Club president for 14 years and now lends a hand with home games in Rockhampton.
Baron expressed his thoughts on the positive prospect of having a CQ NRL team and the construction of a stadium here in Rockhampton.
