IF you’re a bloke and want to know how to attract the ladies, read on.
A poll carried out by more than 700 females on dating website RSVP saw 93% of respondents saying they would like to date a tradesman rather than a metrosexual man.
Rockhampton’s Sarah Miles couldn’t agree more – she married one.
In the current economic downturn, women are apparently opting for security over appearance, and RSVP’s customer support director Lija Jarvis said the results were an indication that the time of the metrosexual was over.
Sarah said she didn’t know of any females who wanted to date a man who was “higher maintenance than they were”.
“None of my friends have metrosexual boyfriends,” she said yesterday.
The term “metrosexual” refers to heterosexual men who have a strong concern for their appearance.
“I’ve got a few male friends who you would call metrosexuals– they can name more than two varieties of clothing labels and prefer to drink anything to beer.”
Sarah said her husband, Wayne Barnett, was a plumber by trade when they met 10 years ago but now he had “hung up his trade tools” to become the coach of the Central Queensland Comets.
“I think the fact that he was a tradie was definitely appealing; he had a van and he used to wear rugby socks with his steel-capped boots,” she said.
“The steel-capped boots did it for me; I was 17 at the time.”
According to the results of the survey, the appeal of tradies lies in their sex appeal, with “sexy and strong” being the most popular reason given for lusting after them.
Another 20% said they liked that tradies were “not afraid to get their hands dirty” and 15% wanted a tradie because they were “handy around the house and garden”.
Sarah said the best thing about having a tradie husband was that they could do jobs around the house and they were “survivors”.
“If I was stranded on a deserted island the only thing I would want is him because I know we would survive,” she said.
“I think it’s also relevant to the recession in that we have no problem keeping the tradies here and thank god for that!”
When asked which of the tradies they thought were sexist, builders came out on top with 47% followed by chippies with 21%.
