Oarsome foursome

THESE four witty Melbourne chicks are taking girl power to new levels when it comes to rowing.

They are wearing the bling, their nails are done, they have the lippy on and they are going for gold today.

Kaye Schmidt, Kirsty Russell, Suzanne Morse and Kathryn Taylor proudly showed off their second place medals for the women's 43 years and over quad in day two of The Australian Masters Rowing Championships yesterday.

Soaking up the Central Queensland sun by Rockhampton's Fitzroy River, the all-girl team were a long way from the cosmopolitan Yarra River in Melbourne.

“This (the Fitzroy River) is a beautiful wide river for us,” Kathryn said.

“If we do see a croc, you will see the first girls walking on water from fright,” Kirsty added.

After hours of intense weekly training for the past six months, they joined eight others from the Melbourne Rowing Club for the event.

“We also have one drinking session a week ... water of course,” Suzanne, the single woman of the team said.

The bubbly foursome said when they were not in the water, training or working, they enjoyed a good Aussie wine, sleep and time with the family.

“It's always a lot of fun out on the water and laughs and bling are our fun thing,” Suzanne said.

They wanted to make a special mention of their wonderful coach Mark Baxter.

“He has put a lot of time, heart and soul into getting us to where we are today,” Kirsty said.

The Victorians finished their race in 4min 13.32sec and each have about eight races throughout the four-day event.

• To check out all the rowing action, head down to the Fitzroy River Rowing Club from 8am today and from 7.45am tomorrow.
