Comets on home straight to finals

THERE'S no place like home for the Central Comets in their surge towards a maiden Queensland Cup finals appearance - and possible home semi-final.

GO COMETS: The big Browne Park crowd get behind the Central Comets in last weekend’s win over Redcliffe. The club is chasing a home semi-final in the final rounds.

THERE'S no place like home for the Central Comets in their surge towards a maiden Queensland Cup finals appearance - and possible home semi-final.

That's the strong message from Comets chief executive Scott Minto, who says the club is determined to finish their groundbreaking 2009 season with a bang.

The Comets enjoy a break this weekend with the annual City versus Country representative clash at Ipswich before their next match against the Ipswich Jets at Browne Park on July 11.

There will be four Comets in action in Saturday's ABC television game, with fullback Tom Hewitt, centre Karl Johnson, prop Aaron Summers and second-rower Alan Rothery donning Country jerseys after being rewarded for the club's early season form.

With seven rounds to go, the Comets lead the competition alongside defending premiers Souths Logan on 22 points, with the joint leaders enjoying a four-point buffer at the top ahead of a chasing pack.

After the Ipswich game, the Comets travel to Biloela for an “away” clash against Norths, with the Brisbane-based Devils taking their home match to the Callide Valley.

The Comets play three of their remaining five games at Browne Park, with the run home including a road trip to Mackay and an away clash in Cairns to play the Northern Pride.

Minto believes the Comets can not only secure their first finals berth but also finish in the top-three, which means a home semi-final in week one of the finals series.

“The next three weeks we see it being three home games in a row and we'd like to think we could get at least two wins,” Minto said.

“If we do that we should make the top-three and that means a home semi for us.”

This year's top-six finals series will see the top-ranked team host the bottom-placed side while No.2 play No.5 and No.3 meet No.4.

The two lowest losers are eliminated while the winners proceed to the preliminary finals.

The 2009 Queensland Cup grand final is on September 12.

With Comets' home games attracting crowds of 4000-plus this season, Minto said the players would “feel 10 feet tall” if they had a chance to play a semi-final and even preliminary final at Browne Park.

“It would be a massive advantage. We'd just about fill the place with five or six thousand,” he said.

“The atmosphere has been unreal lately and add another thousand or two and the boys will feel 10 feet tall.”

The return of former Queensland and Australian flyer Matt Sing in last weekend's 28-24 win over Redcliffe has also boosted the Comets' finals chances.

“A few of the boys got a big lift with Singy out there,” Minto said.

The Comets' previous best finish was seventh in 2001, with the team winning seven games and recording three draws and 10 losses. After 15 rounds, the Comets of 2009 have already 11 wins in the bag, which included a club record nine-straight wins, and only four losses, including just one at home.
