WHEN Ashley Hennegan left for Brisbane at the start of the year he was unaware his progress would be so swift.
Now after his first full season in the tough divisions of the Brisbane game the teenager has ended a fabulous 12 months of hockey by being named the Brisbane Hockey League “Rookie of the Year”.
The Brisbane Hockey Awards, held at the State Hockey Centre last Saturday, was when Hennegan found out he was following a similar path to greats of the Australian game like national under-21 player Matthew Swann and the world's number one hockey star, Rockhampton's Jamie Dwyer.
Hennegan joined the University club at the start of 2009 and has impressed, as the students recorded one of their better seasons with victories over two of the high-flyers of Brisbane hockey Commercial and Easts.
The Southside United player has been playing at fullback for his Brisbane club team.
Another feature of the season for Hennegan was taking the role of co-captain for the Queensland Under-18 team.
