Twenty fires keep Qld crews busy

Qld urged to prepare for bushfiresWITH the climate creating dryer conditions once more in south-east Queensland, the threat of bushfires this season is very real.

QUEENSLAND firefighters are battling at least 20 fires across the state.

Firefighting helicopters were called to water-bomb a large grass fire in the Lockyer Valley, west of Brisbane.

Five urban and four rural fire crews responded to the fire which burnt out a square kilometre of grassland.

The fire is now under control.

At Toorbul, north of Brisbane, around 6ha of forestry has been burnt out and four crews are battling to bring the blaze under control.

One fire crew continues to monitor a fire at Mountain View Drive at Minden, which caused problems on Wednesday.

The fire was contained around midnight following water bombing by helicopters and the efforts of firefighters.

In the Gold Coast hinterland, fires are burning at Parkwood and Pacific Pines, while to the west of Brisbane, a bulldozer is helping to contain a fire at Grandchester.

Seven fire crews remain at a forest fire burning in inaccessible areas near Kilkivan, northwest of Brisbane, while six crew monitor a blaze at Granville.

In central Queensland, crews are working on establishing containment lines and fire breaks around a fire at Mt Archer, near Rockhampton.

The fire has been burning since Friday and authorities are urging residents with properties that back onto bushland in the Archer Ranges to be ready to enact their fire plan if necessary.

In far north Queensland, blazes are burning at Little Mulgrave and Paddys Green, near Mareeba.
