Ergon Energy replaces burnt power poles

<strong>FIRE UPDATE:</strong> Field crews from across CQ arriving in Rockhampton to repair and replace 18 power poles burnt in yesterday's large bushfire.

ERGON Energy field crews from across Central Queensland are converging on Rockhampton today to repair power poles in the Lakes Creek and Nerimbera area damaged during yesterday’s bush fire activity.

Acting Area Operations Manager Steve Barrett said 10 power poles will need to be replaced and a further eight will need repairs as a result of bush fire damage.

“Emergency response plans were put in place last night for additional crews to come from Emerald, Gladstone, Monto, Biloela and Yeppoon to assist local Rockhampton crews. To get this work done effectively and safely as possible we will be interrupting power in the area from mid morning on” he said. 

“While this work is being carried out we ask people not go near crews so that the work can be done as quickly and safely as possible and power is reinstated. We also urge people to report any power poles on fire to Ergon Energy or emergency services as soon as they can so the situation does not become worse down the track.”

Power was reinstated to 269 customers in the Lakes Creek area around Cooper Street and Rockonia Road area last night at 8.12 pm after emergency services directed Ergon Energy to shut down power in the area earlier in the evening while bush fires were threatening.

A further 91 customers in the Nerimbera area along the Emu Park Road were also reinstated late last night after bush fire activity cut supply to the area late yesterday afternoon.

The community is urged to observe the current fire bans put in place by emergency authorities, ensure they have adequate evacuation plans, listen to radio bush fire emergency broadcasts for information, and most importantly – always stay safe.

With bush fires currently raging in the Mt Archer and Berserker Range area, the potential for power poles to be burnt and power lines brought down is quite high.

“If people see any fallen power lines, our advice is not to go near them, keep others away and report the incident to Ergon Energy on 132296 or emergency services” Mr Barrett said.
