“IT'S been a long night, and it’s going to be a long day."
Rockhampton firefighter Shane Slater summed up the ongoing bushfire threat on Forbes Avenue, North Rockhampton about 9am Sunday as he and other Queensland Fire and Rescue Service crew members saved another home from flames. 
They had just brought a blaze under control after it flared just metres away from Wayne Menzies’ two storey house at the end of Forbes Avenue.
The street, on the edge of bushland at the foot of the Berserker Ranges, had been on high alert for more than 12 hours and firies had just left after hours of backburning when a wind change reignited the fire.
“Thanks to the boys (firefighters),’’ a grateful Mr Menzies said.
“The wind changed. It was a matter of minutes. The boys (firefighters) had only just left after back burning.’’


 Another Forbes Avenue resident, Jason Reimers, said the fire crews had done a great job during the night.
“You can just imagine what it would have been like if they hadn’t been here,’’ he said pointing at the blackened bushland just metres from his home.
