Face and neck gashed in attack
A 24-YEAR-OLD suffered deep cuts when a glass was thrust into his face and neck during a row in a Rockhampton pub at the weekend.
It is the latest in a series of glassing incidents in the city that has caused senior politicians to consider a ban on glasses at some bars.
It comes as Premier Anna Bligh has signalled an unprecedented state-wide blitz on drunken hot spots during the festive season.
The Government is pouring $1.5 million into a get-tough campaign on drunkenness, anti-social behaviour and harm reduction activities.
The money will fund 16,000 additional hours of policing aimed at reducing property damage, drunken violence and sexual assaults associated with heavy drinking over Christmas and the new year.
Yesterday, a spokesman for Ms Bligh’s office said Rockhampton would be part of the blitz, along with other areas where alcohol-fuelled violence was a problem, like Brisbane’s CBD, Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast, Airlie Beach and Mackay, Townsville and Cairns.
Hundreds of officers will be involved in the hot-spot operations during December and January, and licensees of pubs and clubs could expect regular inspections to ensure they were complying with responsible service of alcohol laws, and other conditions of their licences.
In addition to highly visible uniformed patrols, plain-clothed officers would mingle with revellers to spot under-age boozers and excessive levels of intoxication.
“We want to ensure that party-goers can celebrate the festive season in safety,” she said.
“That’s why my Government will make an additional $1.5 million available to pay for overtime in a state-wide blitz targeting anti-social behaviour in public places.”
It will be up to divisional assistant commissioners to decide how to allocate the resources and where to concentrate attention.
But Member for Rockhampton, Robert Schwarten, said yesterday that he would expect a considerable effort in Rockhampton.
The glassing victim, who was attacked shortly before 11pm on Friday night, at the Ginger Mule, in William Street, was released from Rockhampton Hospital after treatment.
A 24-year-old man will appear in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on December 7 charged with unlawful wounding.
Police said the two men were involved in a verbal argument before the alleged attack.
