Jamie Dwyer.
ROCKHAMPTON hockey superstar Jamie Dwyer insists he’s still human, despite his wizardry on the hockey field once again on show at the Champions Trophy in Melbourne.
Dwyer’s wonder goal in Australia’s 7-2 demolition of arch-rivals the Netherlands on Sunday was still the talk of Melbourne and in his hometown yesterday.
The Kookaburras captain buried the Dutch with a “tomahawk” reverse stick shot from the edge of the shooting circle to end the record rout.
“That’s impossible. That cannot happen – WOW!” one television commentator said.
Speaking to The Morning Bulletin after yesterday’s rest day, Dwyer said the goal would definitely feature on his highlights reel when he hung up the hockey stick.
“It’s probably in the top five goals I’ve scored I reckon – it came off pretty sweet,” the 30-year-old said.
“It was a good team performance and to cap it off with a goal like that was great.”
Dwyer had extra reason to smile, with the sizzling strike sailing past his teammate Jaap Stockmann from Dutch club Bloemendaal.
“I’ve got bragging rights for a while,” he laughed.
The Kookaburras are chasing a hat-trick of wins when they tackle England tonight.
Dwyer, who also scored in Saturday’s 4-0 opening win over South Korea, said the Kookaburras were a work in progress, despite their stunning start to the tournament.
“Still, there were patches where we could have been better and we need to get better, though it’s always good to get seven goals in a game,” he said.
“We’ve got a lot of players who have debuted for Australia this year and we’ve got a broad squad, and that’s healthy for our program.
“There are some hard selection issues, but that’s what we want. We want people to continue performing.”
Fellow Rockhampton hockey star, Australian defender Mark Knowles, is also turning heads in Melbourne with his handlebar moustache for Movember. But the “mo” is expected to go today.
